Angelina at Refugee Camp in Chad.
BAHAI, Chad, February 27 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie on Tuesday completed a two-day mission to a refugee camp in eastern Chad which enabled her to assess how the security situation has deteriorated for Sudanese refugees since her last visit to Chad three years ago.
Jolie, who visited both Chad and neighbouring Sudan's Darfur region with UNHCR in 2004, said she was struck by the sense of hope she encountered at the Oure-Cassoni camp near this town and by the widespread desire for peace-keepers to be deployed in Chad.
She also reflected on the hardship and suffering she had seen at the camp, which is located less than five kilometres from the border with Sudan. "It's always hard to see decent people, families, living in such difficult conditions," she said. "What is most upsetting is how long it is taking the international community to answer this crisis," Jolie added.
The award-winning actress had to travel through a sandstorm on Monday to reach the Oure-Cassoni camp, which with a refugee population of more than 26,000 is the northernmost of 12 UNHCR-run camps in eastern Chad housing more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan's troubled Darfur region.
She was greeted at one of the camp's many primary schools by singing children as the desert wind whipped against the plastic sheeting serving as the structure's roof and walls. The encroaching sands and storms make their hard life even tougher, with many of the tents and mud-brick houses partially or completely buried. Wood for cooking and heat is scarce in the region, and competition for the resource causes friction between the refugee and local populations.
Refugee women are sometimes sexually and physically abused while out collecting the precious scraps of firewood beyond the protection of police provided by the Chadian government to help ensure refugee security.
At the school, Jolie listened to children's tales of daily life, their concerns and their hopes of one day returning to their homes in Darfur. The room was filled with laughter as she and the children took turns drawing for each other. She later visited mentally ill refugees.
On Tuesday, Jolie visited a man-made reservoir that feeds the camp with water, but which is now almost empty following disappointing rains last year. Its shrinking reserves are a matter of concern for the refugees and UNHCR.
She then sat down with a group of women and discussed their desire for access to income-generating activities as well as their longing to return home. But the women, who were preparing celebrations for International Women's Day on March 8, said it was still not safe enough across the border and many of the refugees she spoke to supported calls for a peace-keeping force in Chad.
In a report last week to the United Nations Security Council, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon proposed sending a multi-dimensional peace-keeping mission to Chad to protect civilians and deter cross-border attacks.
The refugees Jolie talked to also drew comfort from recent radio reports saying that the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) had told the Security Council it had credible evidence of grave crimes against humanity committed in Darfur.
"Today, many refugees seemed to have a new sense of hope, and they want to see those guilty brought to trial . . . In order to feel safe enough to return home, these people said they would need to know that the men who attacked them had been stripped of their weapons," Jolie said. "This is a very important day for international justice. The decisions of the ICC could make a big difference in the lives of these women and their children."
Jolie had high praise for the UNHCR staff and NGO workers that she met in the camp. "Years into this situation, now finding themselves coming under attack, humanitarian workers' spirits are unbroken," she said.
There are more than 230,000 refugees from Sudan in eastern Chad, while some 46,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have found shelter in southern Chad. In addition to these refugees, close to 120,000 Chadians are displaced in the eastern region of their own country.

Paramount and Pitt take on 'Zombies'
Comic scribe J. Michael Straczynski, who also created the sci-fi series Babylon 5 has announced yesterday that he is writing the screenplay adaptation of the zombie book World War Z for Paramount, reports IGN.
The Max Brooks novel was optioned last summer by Plan B, Brad Pitt's production company, and is subtitled, "An Oral History of the Zombie War."
"You all know the novel World War Z?" asked Straczynski of his audience during a New York Comic-Con panel on Friday. "I'm adapting that for Paramount. For Brad Pitt potentially -- we'll see what happens. He might be the star in it. So things are going very well for a TV guy."
IGN reports Straczynski notes the book needs to be modified in order to work as a movie, particularly because of the randon plot and time issues through the recollections of the survivors of a decade-long war against the zombies.(more)

A BABE AMID BRAINIACS
The prestigious Council on Foreign Relations is about to get a jolt of sex appeal.
The exclusive, Manhattan-based foreign-policy group has decided to admit actress Angelina Jolie, a U.N. goodwill ambassador who has taken more than 30 trips worldwide to advocate for refugees, AIDS orphans and disaster victims.
On Friday night, the council's membership accepted Jolie's nomination - meaning she will soon be rubbing elbows with other club members such as Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Henry Kissinger, Colin Powell and Alan Greenspan.
The group requires no academic credentials but looks for members who take part in world affairs.
Many current members call Jolie qualified and support her induction.
"Bring her on," said Dr. Gordon Adams, an international-affairs professor. "The idea of having Henry Kissinger and Angelina Jolie in the same organization is dazzling."
Member Carol Adelman, former head of U.S. foreign-aid programs, said, "It's not like Paris Hilton is being nominated."

Plan B Options Controversial Novel
The Zebra Murders, co-written with TV and film scriptwriter Bennett Cohen, purports to set the record straight about the investigation into a series of racially motivated serial killings in 1973 and 1974 that are among the most horrific—and least talked about—crimes in San Francisco history. But even his friends acknowledge that the book is also an attempt by the city’s first and only African-American police chief to set his own record straight.
It has been optioned by Plan B, actor Brad Pitt’s production company, for adaptation as a movie. A source familiar with the matter says that Plan B is on board to develop the film for DreamWorks Pictures, and that an announcement by the studio may be forthcoming in several weeks.
Among the actors’ names being floated to portray the two black Zebra murders sleuths are Jamie Foxx and Will Smith. But if it happens, the real star will almost certainly be Earl Sanders.(more)

Brad's Co-star Tells All
Lauren Swinney who's currently filming The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in New Orleans with Brad was interviwed by The Times-Picayune and had this to say:
I can't wait for this movie. It sounds really good!
In her latest, small film role, she will appear opposite Brad Pitt, in the screen version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which has been filming here.
"He is such a normal and natural young man," Swinney said of Pitt. "But a bit mischievous, too. He introduced me to the director (David Fincher, who directed Pitt in "Seven" and "Fight Club") and said, 'You have to watch out for him!'
"We were filming in a freezing house in January, and he took off his gloves to shake hands, and I enjoyed that touch, that moment of contact, very much. He made sure I met everyone on the set and put everyone at ease.
"They treated me like a queen. I had my own trailer with my name on it, and the food was so good. When I complimented the berry cobbler, the chef came out and prepared some for me to take home. Really, it was one of the best days of my life," Swinney said.(more)

Brad to Shoot Film In India?
The 43-year old actor has serious plans of shooting a full-length Hollywood film in the city by 2008, sources who hosted the Fight Club star in Varanasi in November last year said:
The star took time out to visit Varanasi while Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie was busy shooting for A Mighty Heart — a movie based on Wall Street Journal scribe Daniel Pearl.
Before this only one mainstream Hollywood film has been shot in the city which has been a heaven for Indian documentary filmmakers.
Reknowned filmmaker Ismail Merchant had shot some sequences of the Merchant-Ivory creation The Guru in the bylanes of Varanasi in the late 1960s and in 2004, trouped to the city again with pop diva Tina Turner for studying the locations of the ancient city for his next venture The Goddess where the singer was slated to play the role of Goddess Kali. Tragically, Merchant passed away in May 2005.

‘’Brad not only enjoyed boat ride on the Ganga river, besides relishing the lassi and paan, but he also videographed many locations on the riverfront, including Darbhanga ghat, Lal Ghat, Rana Mahal Ghat, Ahilyabai Ghat, Daswashamedh Ghat and the Rajendra Prasad Ghat,'’ sources added.
“He me that by 2008, he may produce a film to be shot prominently in Varanasi. The venture would have Brad both behind the camera as well as in front of it. We are now eagerly awaiting his next trip to the city,'’ sources said.
