A MAN stabbed his father to death because he thought he was going to harm actor Angelina Jolie and her unborn baby, a court heard yesterday.

Daniel Carl Ryan, 31, was found not guilty of murder because of mental impairment.
The Supreme Court heard Mr Ryan had had schizophrenia for nearly a decade but had not taken his medication for up to a month before the February 23 attack.

Prosecutor Colin Hillman, SC, said Mr Ryan's sister woke to loud banging noises about 7am and found him attacking their father with a kitchen knife in the hall of the Hillside home.

She fought her brother off, but Reginald Ryan died from two stab wounds to the chest before ambulance officers arrived.

The court heard Mr Ryan ran across the road to a neighbour's driveway, where he was arrested.

Mr Hillman said psychiatrists who assessed Mr Ryan found he was having auditory and visual hallucinations.

The court heard Mr Ryan told a hospital nurse he had to act because his father was "going to hurt someone important".

When the nurse asked who, he said, "Angelina Jolie".

The court was told Mr Ryan thought Jolie's baby was Jesus and said he was ordered to kill his father, the devil, to save them both.

Justice John Coldrey said it was a tragic case and Mr Ryan's sister Kellie should be commended for the courage she showed on the day.

He found Mr Ryan not guilty and will make orders that he remain under supervision in a psychiatric centre after he gets reports early next year.
