Wednesday February 7, 12:57 pm ET
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--When the fourth annual issue of The New York Times Magazine's "Great Performers in Film" appears this weekend, it will be accompanied by the first film ever produced for The Magazine's Web site (NYTimes.com/magazine), "The First Ones," directed by Jake Paltrow. The issue's stunning portfolio section salutes 22 actors who stood out for their intriguing, complex and often thrilling performances in 2006, regardless of whether they were deemed Oscar contenders.
Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Abbie Cornish, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren and Eddie Murphy are among the actors chosen as "Great Performers" for the portfolio by editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg and a team of Times editors, with text by Ms. Hirschberg. Ten photographers noted for their distinctive styles, including Richard Burbridge, Rineke Dijkstra, Katy Grannan, Paolo Pellegrin and Andres Serrano shot the portfolio section.
"The First Ones," an original short film by Mr. Paltrow ("The Good Night"), and commissioned by The Magazine, features seven of the Great Performers, including Ms. Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Mr. DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Ken Wantanabe. Each was asked: What was the first movie you saw that made a big impression on you?
The answers, rich in detail, provide surprising and emotional moments: Leonardo DiCaprio spoke of watching "King Kong" and his memories of his father. Brad Pitt described going to the drive-in with his family and how crushed he was at the ending of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." And Cate Blanchett talked about her obsession with horror films and how it might be related to dealing with the loss of her father.(more)
