Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and David Beckham Lend a Hand

Stars Put Fame to Good Use to Raise Funds and Awareness for Charities
Fundraisers will argue that it’s a difficult job raising awareness and persuading others to take on the plight of charities. Most of us are guilty of trying to avoid eye contact with the clipboard weilding workers who stand on busy streets trying to convince us to donate, hurriedly rushing by them whilst claiming we don’t have time to stop.
Clearly the task is a mammoth one and people aren’t always particularly forthcoming. So what better way to get the public’s attention by enlisting the help of the very species we do pay attention to – celebrities.
For all the press they get, it’s encouarging to know that some celebs utilise it in the best way possible by lending their name and support to good causes.
Before she hit the big time with her Harry Potter series, JK Rowling was a penniless single mother. Since earning her millions, she has become president for the national charity of One Parent Families, illustrating that she acknowledges the struggle despite the fact that she is now in a better financial position herself.
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR (United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees) and has adopted children Maddox and Zahara from Cambodia and Ethiopia. She also donated the profits from the first photos of Shiloh, her baby with Brad Pitt, to charity – a sum reported to be $4 million.
Brad Pitt himself was last year named as one of ‘15 People Who Make America Great’ by Newsweek magazine. They commended him for drawing media attention to some of Africa’s neglected causes. Pitt told the magazine that if the press were going to follow him and partner Jolie everywhere, they might as well lure them to somewhere that needed the world’s attention.
Children’s chairty UNICEF has many famous supporters, including the Beckhams – who donated the £2 million proceeds of their pre World Cup party to the cause – Robbie Williams and Mia Farrow, who recently visited Central Africa to highlight the effects of conflict.(more)
